A male wrinkle-faced bat (Centurio senex) from Belize. Males have a special furry fold of skin beneath their chin that can be raised to cover their face. Note the pair of transparent goggle-like windows that cover the eyes when raised. No one has any idea why both sexes have such strange faces, but only the males can cover them. Since only males have the furry, raisable skin it is assumed they may be used during courtship.. The species is probably not rare, but it is seldom caught by biologists studying bats. Portraits
