The Midas free-tailed bat (Mops midas) ranges from Saudi Arabia across most of Africa to Madagascar. It seems to prefer hot, low-lying river valleys, though it also has been found in forested areas at intermediate elevations. It is locally abundant and forms nursery colonies of up to several hundred individuals in narrow rock crevices, especially in cliff faces, as well as in hollow trees and buildings. It has long, narrow wings for high-speed, relatively non-manuverable flight and hunts high-flying insects out in the open. Portraits
