An adult male Jamaican fruit-eating bat (Artibeus jamaicensis), with his wings slightly spread, is attempting to look extra large while protecting his harem of females and their pups in a Jamaican cave. Instead of courting, these males simply guard a ceiling cavity where females want to rear their young. They gain access to the cavity only if willing to mate with the owner. Males with the best cavities attract the most mates. Courting and Rearing Young
