Catching Prey
Read MoreThe Greater Mouse-eared Bat (Myotis myotis) ranges throughout most of Europe, including also the Syrian Arab Republic and Turkey. It feeds on a wide variety of arthropods, from insects to centipedes, relying solely on its large ears to detct sounds made by prey (footsteps, wingbeats or courtship calls) and often captures prey directly from the ground or from foliage. It uses echolocation only to navigate. This one has caught a Rose Chafer (Cetonia aurata). These bats hibernate in caves, mines or tunnels in winter and rear young mostly in caves or buildings in summer.
