Predation

Rat eating a baby Geoffroy's rousette fruit bat (Rousettus amplexicaudatus) in the Philippines. Predation is unusually heavy in Monfort Cave because some two million bats are forced to roost near floors and entrances due to lack of space in the area's only protected cave. Bats attempting to use alternative caves are caught and eaten by local people. The rats threaten only the youngest bats, but pythons living in this cave easily catch adults as well.
